Morality Of War.
Morality of war..
Before understanding morality of war we should try to understand what is morality. In simple words "The set of standard that enable people to live cooperative in group. It is what societies determine to be right and acceptable". It means that every society has different set of morals. I know that it is not enough to fully understand what is morality but it gives us a rough idea about it.
We all know that humans are also animals and like other animal they also have aggressive nature was a survival tool and it helped to show dominance in stone age and after that but in 21st century need is decreased but some times it is helpful for self defense and things like that. But was is not product of human aggression because human aggression is individual and privet thing but war is political and social and with group vs group but done for dominance and sometimes for self defense also.
Now lets talk about morality of war..
What is morality of war?
According to just war theorist, the key moral principal governing the conduct of war are the principle of (combatants are legitimate target ; civilians are not ),proportionality(combatants must restrain their force to that amount appropriate to achieving their aim target.
" A war might be ethical but the means unethical"
There are some principle for a war to be ethical.
1. Waged by a legitimate authority (usually interpreted as stats).
2.A just cost.
3.Have a strong probability of success.
4.Be a last resort.
5.Be proportional.
As we saw above saw principals of war there are some principles of conduct also.
Principles of conduct are following.
1.Discrimination (enemy and common people).
2.Propotionality ( the harms must be proportional gains).
3.Action must be military necessary.
If you have to understand this principals and conducts you can take the example of Ukraine and Russia war and try to understand with this attitude.
At the end of the day war is one of most horrible thing in human history , and at the beginning morality changes with society and in our todays society we don not have anything to gain from war but we can loss many things. And I think there is nothing as lesser evil, their is just evil or if you go deep there are just action and their consequences. So we should always think about action. If our action is legitimate than we can say our action moral I think.
"War is not a morally legitimate means of achieving anything permanent"
